March.... It
has come to Latvia very silently this year alongside bringing the breath of
spring. The snow has almost melted but it is still cold with occasional snow. There
are no big celebrations in Latvia in March, except the only to be mentioned-
the International Women’s Day, celebrated on the 8th of March.
In the Soviet Union, Women's Day became the "day
of red tulips", when tulips, grown in greenhouses, were presented to
nearly all women and girls. The Women's Day was also a national holiday from
1966 up until the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Since 2008, Saeima has decided to pass amendments to
the law On Holidays and Remembrance Days and exclude Women's Day as an official
holiday.
Although it is
not a national holiday in our country, many people celebrate this day. On this
day men will give women in their lives flowers and small gifts.
If Valentine's
Day celebrates lovers and Mother's Day celebrates mothers, Women's Day is meant
for all others.
