8 March in Greece
Sunday, 8
March 2015 marks International Women’s Day, an annual event that celebrates
women’s accomplishments and promotes global gender equality.
The international women's day,
has its roots in the women's protests at the beginning of the twentieth century
in Europe and the U.S, which called for equal rights, better working conditions
and the right to vote. It was established in 1977 by the United Nations, which
called on all countries in the world to celebrate the day for women's rights.
It is a day of protests around the world in support of equality, and the
evaluation of the position of women in society. Traditionally, associations for
the rights of women and activists march around the world to make their demands
for improvement of position of women known, as well as to celebrate the
victories and achievements of the movement.
Today, in many areas, the
day has lost its political meaning and has just become an opportunity for men
to express their love for women. So, on
March 8 men in Greece give flowers and small gifts to women. They also stay at
home and take care of the children while women go out with their friends and
celebrate this special day.
