September 8 – Birth of the Virgin Mary
September 9- Synaxis of Ss Joachim and Anne, parents
of Virgin Mary. They were commemorated for bringing world salvation with the
birth of their Holy daughter.
September 14- The Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
October 26- Feast of St Dimitrios, a Christian Martyr.
He is patron saint of Thessaloniki and of soldiers.
October 28- The intercession of the Theotokos or The
Protection of the Theotokos. It is the feast of the Mother of God. It
celebrates the protection afforded the faithful through the intercessions of
the Theotokos ( Virgin Mary ).
November 8 – Feast of Michael and Gabriel, archangels. · Michael means "Who is equal to God?" St.
Michael has been depicted from earliest Christian times as a commander, who
holds in his right hand a spear with which he attacks Lucifer/Satan, and in his
left hand a green palm branch. At the top of the spear there is a linen ribbon
with a red cross. The Archangel Michael is especially considered to be the
Guardian of the Orthodox Faith and a fighter against heresies. Gabriel means "Man of
God" or "Might of God." He is the herald of the mysteries of
God, especially the Incarnation of God and all other mysteries related to it.
He is depicted as follows: In his right hand, he holds a lantern with a lighted
taper inside, and in his left hand, a mirror of green jasper. The mirror
signifies the wisdom of God as a hidden mystery.
November 13- Feast of St John Chrysostome, Archbishop
of Constantinople. He is known for his
preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority, the
Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostome and his ascetic sensibilities. He is
recognized as a saint and a Doctor of Church. The epithet Chrysostome means
golden-mouthed in Greek and was given on account of his legendary eloquence. He
is honored as a saint and counted among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with
Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus.
November 14- Feast of St Philip,the Apostle. It is the
beginning of a 40-day fasting period before Christmas.
November 21- The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary or The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, is a
liturgical feast. Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, who had been childless,
received a heavenly message that they would have a child. In thanksgiving for
the gift of their daughter, they brought her, when still a child, to the Temple
in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. This is one of the days when women named Mary (Μαρία in
Greek) and Despoina (Δέσποινα in
Greek) celebrate their Name Day.
November 25- Feast of St Catherine, a Christian martyr
and virgin. She was both a princess and a noted scholar who became a Christian
around the age of 14 and converted hundreds of people to Christianity.
November 26- Feast of St Stylianos , patron saint of
children.
November 30- Feast of St Andrew the Apostle, one of
the first followers of Jesus along with his brother, Peter.
December 4- Feast of St Barbara. She was martyred by
her father who was then punished with death by lightning. So, St Barbara is a
protectress against fire and lightning, guns and mines.
December 5- Feast of St Sabbas the Sanctified, a
Cappadocian-Greek monk, priest and saint.
December 6- Feast of St Nicholas patron saint of
Gastouni. He is also patron saint of sailors.
December 9- Feast of St Anne. The conception of the Most-holy Theotokos by Saint Anna
December 12- Feast of St Spyridonas. He is considered
to be a miracle-worker. He is patron saint of potters, Corfu and Piraeus.
December 15- Feast of St Eleftherios and his mother
Anthia. They are venerated as Christian saints and martyrs.
December 17- Feast of Dionysius, Episcop of the island
Aegina and patron saint of the island Zakynthos.
December 20- Feast of St Ignatius. The saint was
called “God-Bearer” (Theophoros), because he bore God in his heart and prayed
unceasingly to Him. He also had this name because he was held in the arms of Christ,
the incarnate Son of God.
December 24- Feast of St Eugenia, a martyr.
December 25- Birth of Jesus Christ, the son of God.
December 26- Synaxis of the Theotokos. The Church
points to Mary as the one through whom the Incarnation was made possible. His
humanity—concretely and historically—is the humanity He received from Mary. His
body is, first of all, her body. His life is her life.
December 27- Feast of St Stephen, traditionally
regarded as the Protomartyr or
first martyr of Christianity.
